Multi-Stakeholder Workshop Series on Ethical Drug Promotions and Marketing

In the light of improving access to quality and affordable healthcare services and medicines by promoting transparency and accountability in the pharmaceuticals supply chain, the MeTA Philippines will hold a Multi-Stakeholder Workshop Series on Ethical Drug Promotions and Marketing from 31 August – 3 September 2010 at the Asian Institute of Management (AIM), Legaspi Village, Makati City. The workshop consists of 7 separate half-day sessions of seminar-workshops organized among different stakeholder groups – academe, health and allied medical professionals, local and multinational pharmaceutical industry executives, civil society, mass media, and regulating agencies.

MeTA Philippines believes that more informed discussions among concerned stakeholders can help provide the framework for developing standards for marketing practices in the pharmaceuticals industry. Ms. Carole Piriou of Health Action International (HAI), a think tank based in The Netherlands, will act as Lead Facilitator and Resource Person for the 4-day workshop series.

MeTA Philippines: Statement on AO 2010-0008

The Medicines Transparency Alliance (MeTA) Council-Philippines, a multi-stakeholder organization concerned with improving access to quality healthcare by promoting transparency and accountability,

Is concerned about false and misleading claims made about the efficacy and value of food and dietary supplements currently being sold in the market. While these preparations may provide certain benefits, they cannot substitute for medicines of proven efficacy and safety in the treatment of illnesses.  Misleading health information harms health and wastes resources.
Fully supports, therefore, recent initiatives undertaken by the Department of Health (DOH) to protect the right of consumers to accurate information about the products they buy.

When it is not right to light

The Coalition for Health Advocacy and Transparency (CHAT) is a coalition of over 25 civil society and political organizations concerned with issues on access to medicines, public health and good governance. Bound by a common advocacy, but recognizing the independence and integrity of its member-organizations, the Coalition is working to promote transparency and accountability, and encourage sharing of information in the field of public health.

The Coalition lauds the Department of Health (DOH) for upholding the Constitutional right to health and right to health information through the recent issuance of Administrative Order 2010-0013 (AO 2010 0013) requiring graphic health information and prohibiting misleading descriptors on tobacco product packages, and urges the DOH to stand firm despite the attempts to undermine the bold step forward in public health.
